Chapter 11: Rose

Hans left with the rest of the elite guard. He insisted he wouldn’t have if his presence weren’t required and stationed soldiers in my hallway so I wouldn’t be disturbed. Well, that was the official story. Really, he just didn’t want Ambrose to find me.

I don’t know why he’d lied. He must have known I saw right through him. And if he’d been thinking clearer, he would have wondered why I didn’t protest.

The hallway creaked. It’s him, I thought, heart racing. I knew he’d come.

I continued steadily brushing my hair as Ambrose crept through the door. I didn’t turn, but looked at him through my vanity’s mirror.

“The prince is fine,” he said.

No one had ever survived the poison. That this man could accomplish that should have at least felt implausible. It didn’t.

“How did you do it?” I asked.

Ambrose closed the door and leaned against it. “A magician never reveals his secrets.”

A shiver crept through me. “You used magic?”

He turned his head to hide his grin. “No, an illusion.”

But do you think magic exists? The ridiculous question died in my thought as he bent over, his hands disappearing beneath his hair. He shuddered twice, then stood.

Black eyes looked down at me, the emotion in them unreadable. “You look upset, Rose.”

I hated how each hair on the back of my neck stood on end; the chill that swept through my arms; that someone could have such an effect on me. “I am. The next time you want me to lie for you, you must tell me everything.”

He chuckled. “You’re not going to ask about your prince? Snow White? Max?”

I pressed my palms against my dress as I stood to keep them from shaking. “Don’t try to change the subject.”

“I don’t exactly understand what you’re upset about, princess. I told you all you needed to know, and said the story would be fine.”

“How is it fine? No one believed you.”

“That doesn’t matter. They had to accept it because they were given no other choice.”

That’s still not good enough. “What do I tell Max or Hans when they ask about you? Snow White will accept anything I say, but they…they know you weren’t from the other party.”

He pushed himself off the door. There was blood on his shirt. It hadn’t dried yet. How had I not noticed it when he first walked in? It was such a violent, sickening red. “You’re still relying too much on love to control people. You don’t know what to do when faced with someone who either doesn’t care about, or hates, you.”

I shook my head.

“That’s why you told Max you were lying, wasn’t it? Because you wanted him to love you—”

“Stop!” I slammed my fist into the vanity. The jars of powders rattled against the mirror. One slid off, shattered when it hit the floor, and released a plume of white between us. Some of it stuck to the blood stains on his trousers; he made no effort to wipe it off.

“Don’t worry, princess,” Ambrose soothed. “You have me now.
